APGA 2020 Conference Update

by | Jun 29, 2020 | Update Public | 0 comments

Currently, the University of Arizona and Cooperative Extension offices are closed. However, our Extension efforts haven’t stopped. In fact, our efforts are meeting the demand for continued education and resources even amongst a super-bug that minimizes us. There are tentative plans for a gradual reopening starting August 1st. College of Agriculture, Life & Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension administration and select committees have been working extensively on establishing a protocol for reopening, just as much as the UArizona as a whole is working to investigate on how bringing students back to campus is going to look.
Extension work has been reduced to only ‘essential’ projects. This essential work includes long-term ongoing research on pecan projects. For example, just recently, a team consisting of a Dr. Jim Walworth, Mary Cameau, Cyrus Smith, and myself rated pecan trees of various rootstocks in a pecan rootstock salinity and genetic research at the Safford Agricultural Center. And yes, even during the hottest month of the year, we wore face-masks and maintained protection. Just doing our part to help reduce the spread.
Now in this world of so much ‘unknowing’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the discoveries and observations about the virus spread, the importance of maintaining the health of our members, the 2020 conference is being moved to an online virtual format. If you have visited our website, you may have seen that it is ‘Under Construction.’ This construction is only temporary.
Dr. Mike Kilby (Conference & Vendor Chair) and I (Education Chair), and Esteban Castillo (Webmaster) have also been working diligently to navigate this remarkable new territory. It is our hope we leave ‘no stone unturned’ in brainstorming all factors from the way the online content is presented, including vendors and sponsors ever valuable presence, and even to how we are to offer an engaging experience for the participants. It is our goal to have the most fluid and user-friendly platform for our members and guests.
I want to shout out to Esteban Castillo (Webmaster of Fearluz Studios) for the exhausting hours on his part for streamlining this website. On behalf of the APGA Board of Directors, and I am sure of the members as well, we are ever grateful for your expertise in navigating this new territory and all the ‘unknowns’ that may be associated with it.
Yes, we all are looking forward to the day to meet face-to-face, engage like we are used to, share pecan production stories and tips through eye-to-eye contact (and not through a computer screen) we should be confident that this will return.
